Kabardino‐Balkarian State University
The Kabardino‐Balkarian State University (KBSU) is located in Nalchik in the central part of the Northern Caucasus. The university is one of the traditional universities with more than 20,000 students. It was founded in Soviet times for the education of the local cadre, that even nowadays is reflected in the high number of Kabardinian and Balkarian students. Today it is a renowned and highly ranked university which attracts students from other parts of the region and from abroad. The research group involved in ISSICEU is mainly affiliated with the Department of Socio‐Political Theories and Technologies and the North Caucasian Graduate School of Conflict Studies.
Prof. Dr. Alexey Gunya is professor at the KBSU, professor at the Chechnyan State University in Grozny, and senior researcher at the Russian Academy of Science. He is a geographer and anthropologist with broad experience of field work. Besides national research projects, he has participated in international research projects „Accounting for State-building, Stability and Violent Conflict. The Institutional Framework of Caucasian and Central Asian Transitional Societies“ (FU Berlin, 2003-2007), “Development and implementation of educational modules on the topic of Conflict Research in Universities of Caucasus and Central Asia” (KBSU – FU Berlin, 2010-2013). He is the research team leader of WP1 in the ISSICEU project.
Dr. Timur Tenov is a head of the department for Socio-Political Theory and Technologies at KBSU. He is a political scientist. He took part in different projects and worked as a regional coordinator of international project "Development and implementation of educational modules on the topic of Conflict Research in Universities of Caucasus and Central Asia" (KBSU – FU Berlin, 2010-2013). Timur Tenov will conduct the fieldwork in the North Caucasus and will be responsible for carrying out surveys together with PhD students concerning republican and communal governance. He will contribute to WP1 and WP2, in particular analyzing the role of elite in the institutional dynamic and regime stability and conservation.
Dr. Aslan Chechenov is a researcher at the North Caucasian Graduate School of Conflict Studies of KBSU. He obtained his degree in sociology. He leads annual monitoring of social processes between young people, students and scholars in the survey. He also teaches the course "Conflicts and development" at KBSU. Within the ISSICEU project, Aslan will study the social dynamics triggered by state interventions, with the focus on the role of local (traditional) society in the state-society relations. He will conduct the fieldwork in Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia and collaborate with PhD students contributing to WP1 and WP2.
Dr. Murat Shogenov is a researcher at the North Caucasian Graduate School of Conflict Studies of KBSU, and is involved in the fieldwork within the joint international project «Conflict and Development». Within the ISSICEU project, he will conduct the fieldwork in Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia and collaborate with PhD students contributing to WP1. In addition, he will be responsible for quantitative survey within WP2.
Dinara Gaunova is an assistant in the Center for sociological research, postgraduate researcher at Southern Federal University, participated in international project "From understanding local conflicts to using development opportunities". Within the ISSICEU project, she will be conducting the fieldwork in Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia within WP1.
Oksana Kundetova is a PhD student and junior researcher at North Caucasian Graduate School for Conflict Studies. She participated in the international project "From understanding local conflicts to using development opportunities". Within the ISSICEU project, she will be responsible for carrying out surveys concerning republican and communal governance within WP1.
Raisa Mashkova is a former researcher at Kabardino-Balkarian office of the Russian Academy of Science and researcher at the North Caucasian Graduate School for Conflict Studies. Within the ISSICEU project, she will be conducting the fieldwork in Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia within WP1.
